First Period Worcester Saucer Dish with Kakiemon decoration

A first period Worcester blue scale saucer dish.  A less common shape than a saucer or a plate as there would only be a couple made for an entire tea service, this one has a diameter of 190 mm.

The rich blue scale is a lovely ground on which brightly coloured painted panels are displayed framed with fine gilt ornamentation.

This dish has a kakiemon design, inspired by the Japanese dishes which would have come originally as exports from Japan to Europe.

These designs were copied by some of the great early producers of porcelain in Europe, Meissen and Chantilly to name just two, and both much earlier than the formation of the Worcester factory.

This dish has the underglaze blue fret mark which was used from 1765-1775.  As Worcester was still a relatively young company this period spans an important phase in its foundation, initial development and growth.

Some dishes with this design are not as well executed.  I can not say if the better and more detailed brushwork is of the earlier period but i suspect that is the case.  This dish as you can see from the images has fine detail, and is really nicely done, a good example for any collection.

It has a pleasingly simple shape, like a large tea saucer, so the design is less interupted than on the surface of a plate, and enjoys more space than a saucer.

The design incorporates branches, chrysanthemum flowers and sheafs of wheat or hay.  A single insect is found in one section, an nice idiosyncratic detail.
