Caughley Plate Blue and Gold Decoration
An eighteenth century Caughley porcelain plate dated Circa 1775-1790.
Decorated with underglaze Cobalt Blue and gilding in floral designs.
This design is pictured in the book 'Caughley and Worcester Porcelains 1775-1800' where the pattern is described as "Dresden Flowers and border."
This example has quite heavy wear to the gilding but still has beauty and charm.
Caughley porcelain was made from around 1775 to 1799, at Caughley near Broseley in Shropshire, England.
Set up by Ambrose Gallimore and Thomas Turner, Caughley produced some of the finest soft-paste porcelain made in England in the 18th century.
Many shapes and patterns were produced but most of the production was useful wares: tea services, dinner services, and everyday objects that would be used in the households of the then-emerging middle classes.
The porcelain was decorated largely in underglaze blue, although enamel colours and gilding were also used.
