What a wonderfully fresh design on this Chelsea gold anchor plate.

Pink enamels first came into use around 1720 and were used by the Chinese on Imperial and export wares.

In continental Europe the very first experiments in porcelain manufacture were just being explored around 1700 but very little was produced in the early 18th century.

As production increased towards the middle of the century we do see pink and puce becoming quite popular.

The elegance of the design really demonstrates how contemporary English factories like Chelsea paid careful attention to rising Continental fashion trends

A fine pink around this border, very nicely offset by the use of delicate gilding and beautifully balanced with a central classical urn adorned with garlands of flowers.

The gold anchor period is generally dated between 1756 and 1769.  I think this plate must have been made towards the end of this period as the central urn theme became very popular for a time particularly during the 1770's and you see examples on Chelsea, Chelsea-Derby and Worcester wares decorated in London at the workshop of James Giles.

A really delightful plate, hard to believe that its a little over 250 years old.
