Creamware Spaniel Probably Bovey Tracey c. 1790
A fabulous late 18th century creamware spaniel figure possibly made at the Indeo pottery which was one of the Bovey Tracey area potteries.
The very simplistic underglaze black and brown decoration is achieved by mixing metal salts into a paste and applying them before covering with glaze and then firing, so the colours are under-glaze.
The naivete of the decoration contrasts with quite a nicely observed and sculptural form, some hair detail, an alert posture, this figure is filled with personality and charm.
This one has the well known dealer Martyn Edgell's label inside.
Great little thing and quite rare.
