What a fabulously ornate and colourful saucer. Fresh and bright, it evokes for me the Italian sunshine and smell of the sea air. 

A gilded rim and touches of gilding in amongst the moulded and painted decoration of shells and swags of flowers.

Following on from a tradition of highly moulded relief decoration which was developed during the 18th century, this saucer is a version which has evolved though a few different phases.

I have seen this saucer design listed as 1780, one by a reputable seller and one in a museum collection, but on balance in my opinion this was made in the mid 19th century.
