First Period Worcester Mug 1775
A very nice example of a Worcester mug measuring 87mm tall. These mugs were made in various sizes but are larger than the typical straight sided coffee cup and were probably used for cider, or ale.
The pattern is called "The Fruit Sprays" and is classified in Branyan French and Sandon as "not uncommon".
"The painting style displayed on pieces decorated with this pattern can vary enormously, as can be seen by comparing the earlier mug illustrated with the coffee cup made some ten years later (referring to the illustration). The subsidiary sprigs found with this design are often the same as those associated with the 'Gilliflower/Narcissus' or the 'Rose' ".
Worcester Blue and White Porcelain 1751-1790
They give a date range between 1775-85 and considering the care with which this has been painted I am dating it to the earlier end of this range around 1775.
It is hand-painted in underglaze blue cobalt with a typically grooved strap handle. Quite finely potted, it has a wide foot rim as is usual with these types of mugs.
