Flight Worcester Lemonade Beakers 1783-92
A beautifully gilded pair of porcelain lemonade beakers made by Flight Worcester.
Lemonade was very fashionable in the late eighteenth century, and was drunk at society occasions where it was considered an adult beverage.
Lemonade beakers are a bit of a rarity in porcelain, and here we have a fine pair made by one of the best English porcelain manufacturers of the period.
Flight took over the Worcester factory in 1783, and continued to use the crescent mark as seen on these beakers, but it tended to be a smaller crescent. This period continued until 1792 when the word 'Flight' was added, and then a variety of marks are seen.
This is a fine pair of beakers, with high quality gilding. A fine dark blue line towards the bottom of the beaker lined above and below with gilded lines, and crossed by gilded arabesques of foliage.
The top edge decorated with a wider dark blue band decorated with a pattern of gilding and below which are swags of leaves and acorns making a beautiful border pattern.
The rim is gilded and on the inside a further pattern of gilding runs around the inside of the lip.
When we turn them over we see that the bottom has been recessed leaving a nice square foot rim, and the crescent mark is in underglaze blue.
