This is an uncommon piece of smear glazed drabware, with sprigged decoration.

The sprigs are of a classical theme and I have seen a few pots with the same sprigs but all unattributed, so have not been able to attribute a maker to this piece.

The shape and style put the date most probably around 1820 or possibly earlier, and this would have been used for honey.

There is no space for the spoon, and the "dish" part is fixed, only the lid can be removed.  

My feeling is that if the honey were to live in the pot permanently in the pantry then you wouldnt want any gaps where little bugs could crawl into the honey, hence the reason for no cutaway at the rim for a spoon.

The outer surface of the pot has a texture which would have been formed by rotating the pot on a wheel while at the leather hard stage (semi dry) and using a tool consisting of a small wheel with with spikes that would leave this impression.  Technically it's been "rouletted".

Then the sprigs in the lighter coloured clay applied, and the whole thing fired, glazed and fired again.

Its a rather handsome, and unusual piece.  The last picture shows Wedgwood designs from 1817, and number 337 and 340 are described as honey pots.  I included this as evidence that honey pots in this shape and size were made, and in this period.

It is inscribed with a pattern number "64".

Good, a chip to the rim of the pot and a couple of chips to the finial on the lid, but no cracks or restoration and quite sturdy.
