Japanese Tea Bowl by Yoshida Zuisen II

This bowl was made by Yoshida
Zuisen the Second, probably in the 1970's.

Born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1922 he studied under
Zuisen the First who himself was held in high regard as
a master.

While studying with Zuisen the First, Yoshida learned
to master underglaze blue and carved designs, and
produced a wide range of pottery.

In 1980, he was certified as a traditional craftsman for
Kyo ware.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and
features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain
base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas,
allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to
be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced
chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony.

Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.

This bowl is hand made in high quality porcelain, and
decorated in a pink enamel overlaid with gold and
signed in gold on the base.

A finely made bowl and quite unusual, embracing a
modern aesthetic while still referencing traditional
crafts of the Japanese potter.
