Sevres Saucer
£445.00 inc. tax
A beautifully decorated and gilded Sevres saucer. The body is 18th century soft paste, but its been decorated in the 19th century probably around 1820.
The blue ground has a rich deep blue which has a slightly uneven density. This is the earliest ground colour, originally used at Vincennes and known as bleu lapis, a reference to the stone, lapis lazuli.
It was introduced in 1751, probably to imitate Chinese powdered blue grounds. It is uneven and mottled as it was applied directly onto the unglazed body, with powdered cobalt added as a colourant, before glazing and firing. In the 1770s, it was known as ‘gros bleu’ (dark blue).
The central reserve is not circular but has been distorted with flatterned sides against the three outer oval reserves.
The flowers are painted in clean light coloured enamels and are high quailty. The gilding is tooled and contains arabesques and floral garlands, possibly roses which the petals of which have been tooled.
Around the rim is a wide reserve containing alternating chains of gold dots and green leaves, and finished with a plain gilded rim.
Possibly the Feuillet workshop.
