Spode "Egg and Spinach" Plate
A very unusual hand decorated creamware side plate made by Spode.
The pattern is B354 and was registered in 1831.
Examples of wares using splashes of yellow green and purple glazes first became popular in the Tang Dynasty generally and were generally used for grave objects.
Much later during the early Qing dynasty, the potters of the Kangxi Reign 1662-1722 started making wares with yellow green and sometimes brown or purple splashes.
These wares were called "Hu pi ban" or "Tiger Skin" but Western collectors when they first came across them
named them "Egg and Spinach".
Here we have a late Georgian creamware side plate decorated in a similar fashion, clearly taking its inspiration from antique Chinese ceramics.
This is an unusual and innovative design by Spode. It has a timeless quality. Had this been made by Terrance Conran in the 1950's or 60's it would not have been out of place.
