This is a rare marked example of a Verneuilh and Varnier cup and saucer made between 1781 and 1787 so not only rare because the factory was only producing porcelain for about six years but also because it is marked with the double V's in gold on the saucer (quite worn but visible) and on the cup.

Verneuilh had a business in Bordeaux producing ceramics and faience.  Varnier had the method for making for porcelain, and so when he arrived in Bordeaux they teamed together for some years to produce Bordeaux porcelain.  

The patterns tended to reflect the fashions which were current in Paris in the late 18th century.  This cup is a wonderful example because it has such vibrant colours,  acid yellow,  green and pink, with gold, and such a bold design.

Certainly an unusual and rare cup and saucer.
