Victorian Floral Decorated Plate
A plain very white and translucent bone china plate hand painted with an abundance of wonderful flowers.
The painting is detailed and high quality, but there is a formality and stiffness which suggests that this may have been painted by a hobbyist.
It was not uncommon in Victorian England that men and ladies would paint on porcelain as a hobby. Sets of enamels sold as kits for the hobbyist testify to this public interest in the skill.
This plate is very skillfully painted and must have taken a great deal of time. I have not been able to trace its origin, nor is it marked or stamped in any way.
The presence of the hanging red fusia flowers to the left of the plate indicates that this must have been painted in or after the 1870's when Fuchsia boliviana was first introduced from Peru
Marks:
None
Size:
22.4 cm diameter
Weight:
425 g
Age:
140 years
Condition:
A few scratches to the enamel, please look at the pictures carefully. Also there is a split in the rim. I beleive that has happened during firing the enamels rather than from an impact shock. Does not detract from the enjoyment of the plate.
