Wedgwood Ravenstone Urn 1960’s
An interesting and surprising design, these classical shaped vases were produced in the 1960's.
Looking very like black basalt though with a tighter and more vitreous surface, because these are glazed with an eggshell black glaze over a cast stoneware body.
The eggshell very effectively highlights the pared back neo-classical simplicity of the form.
Designed by the very innovative and creative works manager Norman Wilson and given the evocative name "Ravenstone".
Wedgwood also produced a creamy white version called "Moonstone".
Various other shapes were later made using these same materials but this urn shaped vase has now become one of Wedgwoods modern classics.
