Here we have a delightful "Yellow Shell" pattern bute shaped bread and butter plate.  

Every tea service would originally have been supplied with a couple of bread and butter plates to serve bread and butter or cakes or sandwitches with the tea.  

This "Yellow Shell" pattern was very popular during the Georgian period and versions were made by Newhall and Machin as well as Hicks and Meigh with slight variations.  

Luckily this one has a beautifully painted and large pattern number so we can identify it as a Hicks and Meigh version bread and butter plate pattern 29.

I also have for sale a cup and saucer in this same pattern but from the Newhall factory.

Hicks and Meigh operated at the Broad Street Works, Shelton, Hanley, Stoke upon Trent between 1807 and 1822, so were only in operation for 15 years, during which time they produced some wonderful wares.
